Sunday, 20 September to Saturday, 26 September, 2026

On Sunday morning we moved to the marina and did the last of our shopping before Josh, Joanne and our two grandchildren arrived for a week in the Whitsundays. We emptied the bikes and sails stored in our garage (third cabin) into Josh's car and turned it back into a bedroom. While this was happening, Jo and I took the kids for a swim at Coral Sea Resort, access to which is one of the perks of staying at the nearby marina.

On Monday morning, in perfect weather, we motored to Blue Pearl Bay to do some snorkelling. It was the first time our 8 year old granddaughter had swum over coral and she and her Mum were amazed at the variety of coral and fish. Meanwhile Mr. nearly 2 spent the time throwing bits of coral which make up the beach back into the bay under Dad's watchful eye.

In the afternoon we headed over to Stonehaven to pick up a mooring for the night. The next morning we got the kayaks into the water and Josh, Jo and our granddaughter kayaked around the bay while our grandson enjoyed more beach time. Highlight for our granddaughter was seeing a goat on the beach.

We then sailed to Hamilton Island where we had booked a berth for 2 nights. The strong SE winds were coming back and this turned out to be a good option. We took the kids to the wildlife park which was excellent given its small size, they had swims in the pool, played in the playground and Mr. nearly 2 enjoyed riding the free shuttle bus around the island.

On Thursday we sailed to Cid Harbour for our final night out amongst the islands. We visited Dugong Beach and played the game Scattles (like Finska), a present from us to our granddaughter for her recent birthday. We were back the next morning for more games and to try fishing. No luck unfortunately.

After lunch it was time to head back to Airlie Beach. We couldn't get a berth at the marina again, so we had to use the public pontoon to load the car ready for an early start on Saturday morning back to Brisbane.

The week had passed quickly with lots of laughs and games of Uno. The kids were great - understood the boat rules, including when they needed a life jacket, and our granddaughter even overcame her fear of our noisy electric toilets! We were very fortunate to enjoy this time together.

More Whitsunday Cruising

Friday, 4 September to Saturday, 19 September, 2026

We spent 3 nights at Airlie, washing and reprovisioning and taking on water at the public pontoon. Still no berths available in the marina unfortunately. We did get to watch the Lions get soundly beaten by the Swans in the Qualifying Final so looks like it is the long way to the Grand Final again for the team. 

On Sunday, we sailed across to Stonehaven in light winds and saw what turned out to be our last whale in the Whitsundays on the way. 

We picked up one of the 2 moorings inside the reef at the southern end.  There are lots of moorings at Stonehaven now so we spent 2 nights here. I kayaked around the reef then snorkelled over the coral which was better than I expected.

On Tuesday we headed to Hayman Island to check out the coral in preparation for the family coming soon. It was great with lots of fish including large, colourful tusk fish.

More strong southeasterlies were coming so we headed down to our favourite bolt hole - Cid Harbour. I walked to Dugong Beach 3 times and Warren tried hard but unsuccessfully to catch a fish.

After 6 nights here we were ready for a change of scenery, so together with Sassafras, we decided to head around to Whitehaven Beach. The forecast was for easing winds and though we had planned the tide, we still had a very uncomfortable trip across from Hamilton and into Solway  Passage.

Perfect weather at Whitehave however again our trip was cut short - this time by a failed pressure relief valve on the hot water system. Warren rigged a temporary fix and with the family due in a few days we headed back to Airlie to order a new one. 

We had 4 nights on anchor to get ready for the family who were coming Sunday afternoon.

SICYC Shaggers Rendezvous 2026

Thursday, 27 August to Thursday, 3 September 2026 

This was the 18th Annual Shaggers Rendezvous and as usual was a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and make some new ones. We missed the first Rendezvous but made it to the second in 2010 and have been many times since if we are in the Whitsundays on the last weekend in August.

Most of our RQ Cruise North buddies were here along with about 65 other boats anchored off Cape Gloucester Resort. This is the base for activities that included a meet and greet, Masquerade party, Shag Islet party, Nautical Schoolies and Pirate party. There was live music, dancing, fireworks, raffles and auctions.

The weekend raises funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and a highlight was the fundraising breakfast and talk by a local PCFA nurse for the region. This organisation does wonderful work supporting men with prostate cancer and also funding research. SICYC has donated more than $850,000 over the years to PCFA.

We left all of our dressup gear at home, so no embarassing photos to share but we did have a good time in spite of this. It was quite windy the 4 days we were anchored off the resort but luckily SE so we were well protected.

On Sunday afternoon, we motored across to Gloucester Island for 3 nights to wait for the winds to ease. Warren caught some fish while I kayaked and discovered a couple of new birds for my life list. Very relaxing after the last 4 hectic days.

On Wednesday, we sailed to Double Bay East then on to Airlie on Thursday in beautiful sailing conditions. Once again we couldn't get a berth in the marinas so after washing the boat and filling our water tank at the public dock, we anchored in Whisper Bay in front of the Marine Rescue building and boat ramp.

Thursday, 13 August to Wednesday, 26 August 2026

After the strong winds came in overnight we moved around to the bay in the east of Macona Inlet, which has more protection from the swell coming in, and had lunch while we waited for the tide to turn. One thing you quickly learn around the Whitsundays, is to cross the passage with wind and tide together if possible. This resulted in us having a very pleasant sail with a double reef in slight seas even though the wind was gusting up to 27 knots.

We anchored off the Marine Rescue Base and went into Coral Sea Marina on Friday for 2 days (all we could get as Hammo Race Week was on). Dinner with the RQ group at Sorrento on Friday night allowed everyone to share their adventures and plans. Other than this, it was boat jobs, shopping and laundry. Once again we were glad for the bikes.

On Sunday, we moved back to near MR and ticked off more shopping and a trip to the doctor for Warren. Winds had been very strong this whole time at Airlie but after nearly a week here, on Wednesday we decided to head across to Cid Harbour. Once again with a double reef, we tacked up the Molle Channel and went through Unsafe Passage which is actually quite safe. Conditions were vigorous!

We had 3 nights at Cid in very strong SE winds. We walked to Dugong Beach, up to Whitsunday Peak and caught up with good friends Lois and Kel, who had been here a week on Elevation.

On Friday 21 August, we were concerned to hear a Mayday call on channel 16. It was the Oyster 825 Viva La Vida which struck a rock near Long Island and capsized in the Whitsunday Passage. All 10 crew were rescued but the yacht is currently anchored upside down in the passage while getting the rig and sails removed and waiting for good weather to tow the boat to Mackay.

On Saturday the winds finally eased and after watching the start of the final race of Hamilton Race week we motored through Fitzalan Passage and set sail for Whitehaven Beach.

Blue skies and light winds made for prefect weather and we got the kayaks down for the first paddle of the trip. Lots of people on the beach, many more interested in the perfect photo than enjoying the beach!

After 2 nights we sailed up the east side of Whitsunday and Hook Islands and around to Stonehaven anchorage which now has lots of moorings available. The strong winds were back with lots of gusts coming down the hills.

Island Head Creek to the Whitsundays

Tuesday, 4 August to Wednesday, 12 August 2026

We exited Island Head Creek at 0640 and set the spinnaker once clear of the island guarding the entrance. Our original plan was to head to Curlew Island, 70nm away. However this would require us to tack downwind and would mean a late arrival at the anchorage. As our current course was straight for Hunter Island, 35nm away, we decided to stop here for the night.

Hunter has a very pretty sand beach, spoiled only by the signs saying firearms are in frequent use on the cattle and deer property. Southern Exposure and Liberty were also here for the night.

On Wednesday, we all headed off for Curlew Island, in about 10 knots of breeze. We set our spinnaker once clear of the shallows west of Hunter and had a pleasant if slow trip to Curlew, arriving in time for a late lunch.

Thursday was a 52 nm sail to Scawfell Island, the start of the Whitsundays. We left early to make the most of the ebb tide together with Southern Exposure. We set our spinnaker and were enjoying the conditions until a whale on a collision course with us surfaced 5 m to port of Phase2. Warren called to brace as the whale dived under the boat, as he was sure it would hit us. We held our breaths and were relieved when it surfaced on our starboard side having missed both rudders and keels! It took a while for our heart rates to return to normal and we counted ourselves very lucky. Below is the distance we like our whales to be.

We made good time to Scawfell and decided to make Friday a rest day so we could have a sleepin. It was windy and rainy all day however, so no walk ashore but we did get to watch the Lions have a big win over the Hawks, thanks to Starlink.

Now that we are in the Whitsundays, the distances between anchorages are much smaller so we slowly cruised our way north stopping at Goldsmith (always a favourite), Shaw and Lindeman Islands before arriving at Whitehaven Beach in perfect conditions on Tuesday morning. A nice mackeral caught on our way to Shaw Island was delicious.

It was busy as usual but we caught up with Sassafras and Brett, Daron and Donna for sundowners. Brett regaled us with tales of charter boat mishaps when he was operations manager up here for one of the companies. On Wednesday morning we hiked up to Whitehaven lookout and took in the views.

After lunch, as we prepared to leave we discovered the water pump was not working. The definition of cruising as boat maintenance in beautiful locations was never more true. Luckily it was only the pressure switch and Warren replaced it with a spare that we had on board. Our delayed departure, however, meant that we arrived at Macona Inlet just as it was getting dark so we anchored as far up the inlet as we dared as a strong SE was forecast to come through overnight. The BOM was spot on and at 0300, 30 - 40 knot gusts tore through the anchorage. Phase2 all secure however.

Pancake Creek to Island Head Creek

 Thursday, 23 July to Monday, 3 August 2026

After a week in Pancake Creek we were ready to move on, unfortunately just as the rest of the RQ fleet arrived here. Early start and we set the spinnaker which we carried until after lunch. The breeze went directly behind us (again!!) and became lighter so we were back to motorsailing for the rest of the trip to Great Keppel Island. We anchored off the old resort at Fisherman's Beach just on dark and had a quiet night.

Next morning we sailed to Rosslyn Bay having booked in for 4 nights at the marina. The RQ fleet would be turning up here over the next few days and dinner was arranged at Waterline restaurant for Monday night as we were heading off again on Tuesday.

While in the marina the bikes (and our legs) got a workout. On Saturday, we rode into Yeppoon on the excellent bikeway and did various boat errands.

On Sunday, we replaced the broken batten box and spliced a ring to ensure the line that caused the issue could not be a problem again - we hope.

With most jobs done, on Monday we rode on more bikeway south to the Causeway. Only an 11km round trip but a very nice spot for morning tea.

Tuesday was moving day as Phase2 and Danu headed to Island Head Creek together with Sassafras (J45) and Aqua Therapy (Fontaine Pajot) who had joined our little group. We carried the spinnaker all day in very sloppy seas and occasional rain. Not the nicest days sailing we have had, but with more wind forecast we decided to sit it out in Island Head Creek. Southern Exposure and Liberty arrived on Wednesday in much nicer conditions.

We have now been here a week with nice weather the first few days but deteriorating over the weekend - windy and showers. The plus side of that was I had plenty of time for a video project I was working on, I could do the blog and Warren caught some fish. I actually fished one day and caught the biggest whiting but I did only catch the one - unlike Warren.

Tomorrow we are heading further north. How far we go will depend on the conditions we encounter.

2026 Cruise North

Friday 10 July to Wednesday 23 July, 2026

Raby Bay to Pancake Creek

We hauled Phase2 out in June at Boatworks for her annual maintenance to be ready for another trip north to the Whitsundays. Our planned departure on 6 July was delayed by a huge high near Tasmania - the largest ever recorded. So it was Friday before we slipped the lines and headed out in a light SW breeze. Sailing is often too much or too little wind and we were only able to sail for about an hour before we motor sailed the rest of the 58nm to the Mooloolah River. This entrance has become a challenge as sand is continually deposited across the entrance. We made the recommended "hook" entry and dropped anchor in the pond.

A small fleet from RQYS was also heading north with us. Danu, a Jeanneau 60, left on Thursday and Southern Exposure, a Hanse 370e, and Liberty, a Beneteau Trawler 40 on Friday with us.

Next day we departed the river early and headed for the Wide Bay Bar in light winds. Bad for sailing but it meant the big swell that had made the bar difficult/impossible had eased to the 1.5m that we favour for the crossing. We had enough wind to get the spinnaker up for a few hours and then it was back to motoring.

We crossed the bar at 1600 (sloppy but safe) then motored up the Great Sandy Straits with the incoming tide to Garry's anchorage.

On Sunday we motored through Sheridan Flats, the shallowest part of the Straits and anchored at Big Woody Island.

We used a new track that had been marked by the vessel Jansz that was much wider and somewhat deeper (minimum 3.9m on a 2.6m tide). The fleet all gathered here ready to cross Hervey Bay for the Burnett River in the morning. We watched the Lions beat Essenden using our new Starlink antenna that Warren had bought.

Another 0630 start on Monday, where we sailed all morning, genoa then spinnaker, before the wind dropped so we were back to motorsailing. We tied up at the Bundaberg Port Marina at 1445.

We had 2 nights in the marina, completing some unfinished boat jobs and I had a quick bike ride to the Burnett Heads IGA for some fresh food. Our group had dinner at the pub that night as Phase2 was planning to head up to Pancake Creek before the arrival of the next lot of bad weather. The rest of the group elected to stay in the marina and hired a car to visit the surrounding sights.

Our sail to Pancake Creek on Wednesday was the best so far on this trip and we anchored in the creek at 1645. 

The winds picked up as expected and we were in the creek for 7 days. Warren caught some fish, we did some repairs and I read - a lot. We had noticed that one of the mainsail battern boxes was damaged so we fashioned a repair from an old toothbrush and stickyback. We ordered a new one and hoped our repair would last until Rosslyn Bay marina.

It was 5 days before I got off the boat for a walk! 

Our last day there we walked up to the Bustard Head lighthouse - a beautiful 7km walk now that the bush has regenerated where the power lines ran, offering shade and a chance to identify the many birds.

After a chat to the caretakers and morning tea, we visited the small graveyard. We once again read the inscriptions of the many children and adults that did not survive their time stationed here.

The next day we left Pancake Creek, bound for Great Keppel Island.
